Circuit Type & Arc Extinction (AC vs. DC) AC and DC arcs behave differently during interruption.
AC Systems: Rely on zero-crossing voltage to extinguish arcs naturally.
DC & Solar PV Systems: Require polarized or non-polarized magnetic arc chutes designed for continuous DC current. Never install standard AC MCBs in high-voltage DC or PV strings.
Breaking Capacity (Icn / Icu) Matching breaking capacity to your system prospective short-circuit current (PSCC) is critical:
6kA (Standard Duty): Suitable for final distribution boards in residential and light commercial buildings.
10kA (Heavy Duty): Required for main switchboards, industrial environments, or installations close to transformer step-down points.
Tripping Characteristics
B Curve (3–5 In): Instantaneous trip for resistive loads (heaters, domestic lighting).
C Curve (5–10 In): Standard protection for commercial loads, fluorescent lighting, and small motors.
D Curve (10–14 In): High magnetic threshold for inductive loads with heavy inrush currents (transformers, industrial motors, pumps).
